Ta’if part 2

March 12, 2009

Assalamu Alaikum, notice that you can click on the links after aayat and you will be taken to the Arabic and translation of aayaat.

After the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam left Ta’if, bleeding, hurt, abused, the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam was so shaken that he didn’t know where he was until he got to a place called Qarn al Manazil. He made du’a to Allah:

“O Allâh! To You alone I make complaint of my helplessness, the paucity of my resources and my insignificance before mankind. You are the most Merciful of the mercifuls. You are the Lord of the helpless and the weak, O Lord of mine! Into whose hands would You abandon me: into the hands of an unsympathetic distant relative who would sullenly frown at me, or to the enemy who has been given control over my affairs? But if Your wrath does not fall on me, there is nothing for me to worry about.”

I seek protection in the light of Your Countenance, which illuminates the heavens and dispels darkness, and which controls all affairs in this world as well as in the Hereafter. May it never be that I should incur Your wrath, or that You should be wrathful to me. And there is no power nor resource, but Yours alone.”

He stopped by a garden owned by two distant relatives of his: Utbah and Shaibah bin Rabee’ah (both killed in Battle of Badr, they were of the three who first came forward for the initial duels in Badr)

Islam of ‘Addas of Ninevah

They sent their Christian servant ‘Addas who was from Ninevah to the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam with some grapes and water.

As if an immediate answer to his du’a: immediate relief from Allah.

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said: Bismillah

‘Addas was impressed: “These are words which people in this land do not generally use.”

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam asked him where he was from and what was his religion.

‘Addas: “I am a Christian by faith and come from Nineveh.”

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam: “You belong to the city of the righteous Yunus, son of Matta.”

‘Addas was surprised. Asked him if he knew anything about Yunus (Jonah).

The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) remarked: “He is my brother. He was a Prophet and so am I.”

‘Addas paid homage to the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and kissed his hands.

His masters admonished him at this act but he replied: “None on the earth is better than he is. He has revealed to me a truth which only a Prophet can do.”

They again reprimanded him and said: “We forewarn you against the consequences of abandoning the faith of your forefathers. The religion which you profess is far better than the one you feel inclined to.”

The first Jinn accept Islam

On his way back to Makkah, the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam was praying tahajjud when a Jewish tribe of Jinn came and listened to him.

And (remember) when We sent towards you (Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace)) Nafran (three to ten persons) of the jinns, (quietly) listening to the Qur’ân, when they stood in the presence thereof, they said: ‘Listen in silence!’ And when it was finished, they returned to their people, as warners. They said: ‘O our people! Verily! We have heard a Book (this Qur’ân) sent down after Moses, confirming what came before it, it guides to the Truth and to a Straight Path (i.e. Islam). O our people! Respond (with obedience) to Allâh’s Caller (i.e. Allâh’s Messenger Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace)), and believe in him (i.e. believe in that which Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) has brought from Allâh and follow him). He (Allâh) will forgive you of your sins, and will save you from a painful torment (i.e. Hell-fire).’” [Al-Qur’an 46:29-31]

Also in Suratul Jinn

Say (O Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace)): “It has been revealed to me that a group (from three to ten in number) of jinns listened (to this Qur’ân). They said: ‘Verily! We have heard a wonderful Recital (this Qur’ân)! It guides to the Right Path, and we have believed therein, and we shall never join (in worship) anything with our Lord (Allâh).’” [Al-Qur’an 72:1,2] … Till the end of the 15th verse.

They became the first to accept Islam from the Jinn and the first Da’ees from the Jinn.

Entering Makkah

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam had no one to be under the protection and patronage of in Makkah as Abu Talib had died and Abu Lahab was now the leader of Banu Hashim. So he sent for some of the respected elders seeking their protection. Mut’im bin ‘Adi (who had helped the Muslims during the boycott) sent his sons to come and accompany the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam into Makkah with their weapons in hand.

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam never forgot Mut‘im’s favour. At the conclusion of the battle of Badr, he declared publicly that if Mut‘im had been still alive and asked for the release of the Prisoners of War, he would not deny him his request. [Ibn Hisham 1/419-422; Za’d Al-Ma’ad 2/46; Mukhtasar Seerat Ar-Rasool p.14; Rahmat-al-lil’alameen 1/71-74; Tareekh-e-Islam 1/123]

Lessons:

  • The Arabs were not learned nor familiar with the Prophets and stories of the Prophets. This is why ‘Addas was so surprised. Many times in the Qur’an Allah reminds the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam that he didn’t have this knowledge and Allah revealed it to him. For example, the story of Yusuf alaihis salam. The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam didn’t have knowledge of it until it was revealed to him when the Jews came to test his knowledge by asking him about the story of Yusuf.
  • The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam’s turning to Allah in sincere du’a and his attachment to salah, even when travelling.
  • Sometimes Allah takes away all those you depend upon, so that you only depend upon Him, so that you turn to Him alone sincerely and acknowledge that He alone is your real confidante.
  • It is as if Allah is showing the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam that if your people do not accept you, then don’t grieve, you will be accepted by people from far off lands (like ‘Addas) and even from another creation of Allah (the Jinn).
  • Sometimes we do da’wah hoping for a particular result but Allah gives us another result. Guidance is in Allah’s hands….we must convey the message, but the guidance is from Allah.
  • There are Abu Jahls amongst the Disbelievers and there are Mut’im bin ‘Adis. The two are not the same with regards to our treatment of them.
